How does a Septic Tank work?
Water and waste enter the tank from your drainage pipework, solids fall to the bottom of the tank and settle. The cleaner liquid passes out the exit pipe of the tank and into a soak away to be absorbed by the ground or sometimes directly into a water course. A septic tank that is functioning properly should have a good culture of bacteria in it to break down the foul waste, identifiable by a thick crust on top of the contents of the tank. The tank should always be at the same level if it is working properly which is the level of the exit pipe.
Signs a septic tank or soak away is not working correctly:

- The grass around the tank is very green and growing well
